Protecting the environment
World Environment Day is on 5 June 2021. The purpose of the day is to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.
We need to be a responsible business and play our part.
Postmasters are also making important changes and saving money along the way.
Saving money and saving the planet – how Bache branch are embracing energy-saving technology
One of the biggest costs independent retailers face is electricity bills. Here is Postmaster Kevin Elson from Bache branch, North West and North Wales region sharing his experience of upgrading to energy-saving technology in his branch. By making this important change, Kevin has reduced his electricity bills by about 40%!

What made you look into investing in low-energy lighting?
Kevin: Going through the accounts I noticed that electricity was one of our biggest overheads. We are limited in what we can do without changing the hardware in the branch, so I looked into replacing some of the old fluorescent lights with modern LEDs. Turned out we could save quite a bit of cash so I chose to invest in new kit.
What did you put in place and what did it cost?
Kevin: I replaced the fluorescent tubes in the store lighting with LED flat panel lighting and replaced the emergency lighting with new LED bulkhead lights that run on 5 watts and meet our fire risk assessment requirements. It’s reduced my consumption from nearly 3000 watts to less than 900. The total cost was £1,400 and a local electrician fitted and tested everything in one day.
Is it paying off?
Kevin: Definitely! My electricity bill is down by about 40% so with the savings of £160 a month the upgrades will have paid for themselves in under 12 months. As we have electric heating, I’ll notice the saving even more when we come to spring and summer and I’m using less heat too.
Kevin: We can still reduce our usage further I look at replacing the refrigeration lighting, staff/stockroom area and outside security lighting. After that, the next phase is to look at an efficient heating system that is also cost effective and again helps to reduce our carbon footprint as well as reducing utility bills.
There’s lots of advice available online about reducing your energy consumption in a retail environment. But beware of scammers who promise unrealistic savings – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, always check suppliers and ask for proper credentials like a registered company number or Gas Safe registration.
Finally, I’ve also started to introduce media screens into the office. Post Office as a business spends a huge amount on Point of Sale marketing materials, by introducing the screens I can reduce the number of posters required in branch therefore helping the business reduce its costs and carbon footprint whilst improving its green credentials.
