Post Office branches among national Convenience Award winners
A pioneering new shop in Brockenhurst that opened on the second day of national lockdown scooped the Best New Store/Refit title at the Convenience Awards 2021 this week.
Welcome Stores Brockenhurst opened in March 2020 and Brockenhurst Post Office was added in June 2020, which restored a Post Office to the community.
Chief Executive Officer Nick Read presented the award to Postmaster Richard Dance at the event, hosted by Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington.
Richard said: “We are overjoyed to have won this award. We had many obstacles to overcome, but we were resilient, and business has thrived. The store opened on the second day of lockdown and although the nearby college was closed and there was a lack of tourists, things went really well despite the restrictions and supply difficulties. The opening of the Post Office has brought us so much goodwill in the village and is a big part of the initial success of the business.”
The shop has a wide range of food retail, and it also specialises in local produce, zero waste and refill products and has a customer sink for free water refills.
Nick Read said: “What was very gratifying was that out of all the 12 specific awards, 50 per cent had a Post Office within them. Time and time again throughout the evening winners and nominees came up to me to say how important having a Post Office was to them during the last 18 months and how important it had been as part of the recovery from the pandemic.”
The other winners with Post Offices were:
- Food to Go Store – Mulkerns Eurospar, Co Down
- Sustainability Retailer of the Year – Mulkerns Eurospar, Co Down
- Multiple Managed Convenience Store – SPAR Malone Road, Co Antrim
- Sales Colleague of the Year – Natalie McKerracher, Scotmid, Menstrie
- Convenience Rising Star of the Year – Enya McAteer, Mulkerns SPAR, Jonesborough
Congratulations to all the Post Office winners and finalists.
