Deputy Mayor cuts ribbon at official opening of South Merstham Post Office, Reigate

The Deputy Mayor of Reigate and Banstead Councillor Frank Kelly, who represents Hooley, Merstham and Netherne “cut the ribbon” on Wednesday 26 August at the official opening of South Merstham Post Office in Reigate, South East region. He was accompanied by the Mayor Councillor Rosemary Absalom.

Postmaster Thuwaragan and Saranya Arruran have run the Corners convenience store in Merstham for the past 10 years and they have taken on South Merstham Post Office. The previous branch, in a different location, closed in September 2018. Customers asked Mr and Mrs Arruran if they would take on the Post Office, but at that time the shop was too small. They increased the size of the premises by also taking on the shop next door and knocking through.

This gave them the space to offer Post Office services alongside the retail counter of the convenience store and Councillor Kelly helped the Arrurans to successfully apply to open South Merstham Post Office.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Kelly said: “I am so happy to be here today to affirm that promises made can be kept, here in OUR Post Office at the heart of the community helping to serve the needs of all. I was very pleased to support Thuwaragan and Saranya during the process of re-opening Merstham Post office from applying to completion. A Post Office offers so many services and as such is vital to the village. It makes it convenient for customers, both local residents and businesses, to do their banking both withdrawals and deposits on behalf of major banks”.

Postmaster Thuwaragan Arruran said: “People are very thankful and pleased that we have opened a Post Office. We have many elderly customers and they struggle to get into town. We are very conveniently located in the village for all residents and local businesses. We were extra busy during the pandemic as people wanted to stay local to do their shopping. The timing is now right for us to operate the Post Office as well”.

Samantha Coe, Change Manager, said: “We are delighted to have restored Post Office service to South Merstham. We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents. We are confident that this vibrant new-style Post Office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs”.
