Customers vote Postmasters their High street heroes

The care and support Postmasters provide to customers and their communities is really special and important. And we want to say huge congratulations to Donna and Bruce Morgan at Biggar Post Office, Colin Wilson at Castle Douglas Post Office and Cherlene and Stephen Cooper at Prestwick Post Office - all Postmasters who have been nominated by their customers and have gone on to win a Regional Champion Award in the Scotland Loves Local High Street Hero Awards.

The awards celebrate the people, businesses and local organisations who have gone the extra mile to support their communities during the coronavirus lockdown and the reopening of high streets in Scotland.

More about the winning Postmasters and why customers voted them their heroes....

In South Lanarkshire...

Donna and Bruce Morgan at Biggar Post Office have been recognised for staying open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for three-and-a-half months to meet demand for home deliveries and ensure key workers could access the essential goods and services they provide.

Customers of Brownlie's said: “No-one could have done more during Covid to keep the community going – safely and with great thoughtfulness.

“They've made sure that no-one has gone without. Brownlie's has been a complete lifeline.”

Donna Morgan said: “The fact people have taken the time to nominate us is amazing. Our staff have been exceptional. They have all really stepped up – and the community has been so supportive.”

In Dumfries & Galloway...

Colin Douglas at Castle Douglas branch has run his Post Office for 26 years, worked in it single-handedly six days a week, for 13 weeks during the pandemic, even going in on his day off. In order to protect his staff andensure key workers could access the essential goods and services they provide; he ran the Post Office alone.

He said: “I'm honoured and very grateful that my efforts have been recognised.”

“It's a privilege to serve as postmaster to this remarkable wee town. To be able to keep families in touch with each other with cards and gifts through the post during the pandemic was really satisfying and allowing businesses to continue to trade with online orders through the postal system means our high street continues to prosper with no shop closures.”

In South Ayrshire...

Owners Cherlene and Stephen Cooper at Prestwick Post Office have worked tirelessly to ensure the community's needs were met and hygiene measures complied with. They went out to local businesses to help with their business cash and postal needs to save them going into other premises themselves.

All regional champions have been featured in The Herald here.

Amanda Jones, Retail Network and Franchise Director at the Post Office said: “Our postmasters do amazing work in their communities. They provide an essential service through their dedication and hard work and we are grateful that in such difficult times postmasters across the country are choosing to help some of those most vulnerable in our society by continuing to keep their branches open. It's great to see that Donna and Bruce, Colin and Cherlene and Stephen are going the extra mile for their community.”
