Get involved in your community: The Great British September Clean 2020

During the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic we’ve seen many Postmasters get involved in their community in different ways. We know some Postmasters want to continue to support their local area and help it thrive.

This month it’s the Great British September Clean – and is another way to get involved. Great British September Clean runs from 11 to 27 September and hosted by charity Keep Britain Tidy.

1. Why is the Great British September Clean important?

There are lots of reasons why it’s important to get involved. More than 2.25 million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day, with litter blighting our streets, parks and beaches and costing us nearly £1 billion a year to clear up – yet it’s entirely preventable.

You can make a difference by improving the environment on your doorstep by showing support for the Great British September Clean.

Keep Britain Tidy has four main aims, to:

Litter blights our streets, parks and beaches and costs us millions of pounds to clear up every year. Keep Britain Tidy is here to inspire people to eliminate litter now and for future generations. This is about more than simply getting people to pick up litter. They aim to change behaviour permanently by spotlighting the problem daily and offering creative solutions. Join their #LitterHeroes.

We waste so much. Every day millions of things that could be reused or recycled end up being thrown away. This is about recycling those plastic bottles rather than throwing them in a litter bin and reducing food waste by only buying what you need. Waste is everyone’s problem and everyone has a role to play in the solution. The little things we can all do will, together, make a big difference. Read more here.

Keep Britain Tidy fights for people’s right to live and work in places they can be proud of and prosper in. But they also celebrate the great parks and beaches that we all benefit from through our awards programmes. The Green Flag Awards improve the quality of parks, the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards recognise the country’s best beaches and the Keep Britain Tidy Award rewards the cleanest places in our towns and cities. From street to sea, they are improving places close to you every day. Find out more here.

Today’s young people are the key to eliminating litter and ending waste for now and for future generations and that is why Keep Britain Tidy runs the world’s biggest schools’ environmental education programme, Eco-Schools. More than 2.3 million children and young people are currently actively engaged in the programme. Their ambition is that every child has the chance to learn about the environment and the role they can play in improving it. Investing in our future means inspiring the next generation today. 3. Why getting involved is good for business

Customers are increasingly looking for companies to be more engaged on the responsible business agenda, the huge following of the Extinction Rebellion movement and other climate activists show just how emotive this issue can be.

There are lots of studies showing customers changing their shopping habits to support businesses which can demonstrate their environmental credentials. Any business which generates or handles disposable items like single use plastic can really benefit from showing they care about the environment and getting involved with initiatives like the Great British September Clean is a great way to do that and promote your business at the same time. As this is a national campaign, having the Post Office brand part of it is a good opportunity to get some exposure for your branch.

4. Support from Post Office if you’re taking part

If you have signed up and will be taking part in this year’s Great British September Clean, Post Office’s marketing and communications team will be happy to help you to showcase your support to your local community.
