Post Office makes tax personal

With the new tax year now underway, our latest media and social campaign sets out to be a timely reminder about personal tax – and shows how Post Office can lend a helping hand, as the go-to provider of essential everyday identity services.

Paying personal tax is a given for everyone in employment, but how many of us understand or feel in control of our personal tax? We’ve commissioned research from 2,000 UK consumers to assess knowledge, attitudes and understanding of personal tax. Released today (8 May), our findings show that:

  • Nearly half of us, that’s 46% of UK workers, have never checked our personal tax account – the free GOV.UK online service to access and manage our tax details
  • This is despite the fact that almost a third (29%) of us would like to have a better understanding of our tax affairs
  • Two thirds (64%) of us don’t know we can access our online personal tax account, so we’re missing out on a range of benefits – from tracking how much tax we’re paying and claiming a rebate, to checking our National Insurance contributions are correct and what our state pension will be

We’ll use our research to generate interest in Post Office through national and regional media coverage. We’re also producing a range of social media content, like Facebook posts and Twitter polls, which will link to a personal tax page on postoffice.co.uk, including top tips on how to MOT your personal tax account.

Lend a helping hand

Identity Services Managing Director Martin Edwards said: “Currently, nearly a quarter (22%) of people don't think they earn enough to warrant looking at their personal tax account. It’s vital that we all are able to understand and manage our personal tax affairs, which can be managed easily on your personal tax account that’s accessible through Post Office Verify.

“For our Identity Services communications this year, we’re using relevant and topical calendar events to raise consumer awareness of Post Office as a trusted Verify partner. By showing how Post Office is a helping hand, we aim to drive footfall in branch and uptake of our Identity Services.

“Hopefully our research findings will also help demystify personal tax for colleagues and our branch network. Our colleagues and postmasters can also lend a helping hand to make the campaign a success by sharing content on their personal and branch social media.”
