British Gas reverses £5 minimum spend decision for prepayment meters

When the exclusive British Gas contract began from 1 January, we mentioned that British Gas planned to introduce a minimum £5 customer spend for prepayment meter top-ups.

This hadn’t yet gone live in the Post Office network but was live in Payzone from the start of the contract.

British Gas has now reversed this decision, so this will not be introduced in Post Office branches now. The minimum spend for British Gas prepayment meter top-ups will stay at £1.

Andrew Goddard, Managing Director – Payments, said: “This is great news for customers, particularly some of our more vulnerable customers who top up their meters at Post Offices.”

The minimum payment has now been changed to £1 in the Payzone network as well.
