Postmaster whose family has run branch for 113 years is “proud to continue to serve”

New Postmaster becomes 3rd generation of the Graham family to run Northern Ireland’s Mountjoy Post Office

Post Offices come in all shapes and sizes and we continue to hear of amazing stories of how services are provided to rural communities across our network. Mountjoy Post Office located just outside Omagh in Northern Ireland has been operated by the same family for an amazing 113 years.

When Robert Graham recently took over the reins at the branch, following the sad passing of his mother and former postmistress Gladys, he became the third generation of the Graham family to run Mountjoy Post Office.

The incredible journey of Mountjoy Post Office began in 1906 when the branch was taken over by John Graham, Robert’s grandfather who served his community until 1942. In 1942, Robert’s grandmother, Hilda Graham and aunt, Jean Henderson continued the family tradition and operated the branch until 1957 when the second generation of the Graham’s family, James Graham, Robert’s father, took over at the helm.

Robert’s mother and community stalwart Gladys Graham, faithfully served her community from 1997 until earlier this year when she sadly passed away at the age of 90 following 22 years of faithful service.

Robert Graham is very proud of his family and its amazing long service to the local community, he commented:

“The Graham family have a very strong history within this area and I am very proud to continue to serve the locality by continuing with our family tradition. I intend to keep Mountjoy Post Office at the heart of the community for many more years.”

Karen Munn, Training and Onboarding Advisor for Northern Ireland recently visited Mountjoy and was impressed by the history of the branch. “Mountjoy Post Office is a very rural Post Office which has been at the heart of this community since the 1850’s.  It is remarkable that the Graham family have operated this branch for 113 years.”

Being at the heart of rural communities and giving them access to vital services is so important. This would not be possible without the incredible dedicated service provided by postmasters across our network. The Graham family have demonstrated this in abundance throughout an amazing 113 years of Post Office service.  With Robert now at the helm, the Graham tradition looks set to continue.
