We’re Stronger Together – South West event

On Tuesday it was the turn of the South West region to host its We’re Stronger Together event for postmasters, hosted by Noor Stone who is currently covering the regional manager role.

Recognition is a big part of these events and Group Chief Executive Officer Nick Read praised the vital role postmasters play in their communities during the coronavirus pandemic, with overall trading hours now back to 90 per cent of the usual level.

As we can’t hold our annual Retail Awards event this year, we’re using the We’re Stronger Together events to highlight regional special commendations.

Barbara and John Beach from family-run Tehidy Road branch won the South West’s Better for Customers special commendation, having earned a special mention from their local council.

Andrew Crabb from Long Ashton won the Community Engagement special commendation after receiving more than 200 ‘extra miles’ in a single day!

And the Local Hero accolade went to Sue Rendell from Aldbourne, not least for helping another postmaster who is in their seventies.

Congratulations to Barbara, John, Andrew and Sue and to all the regional finalists.

As with the previous events, Nick and other leaders talked through Post Office priorities at the moment, where we’re going and what life after coronavirus might look like.

Two local postmasters, Sylvia Ainley from Bridport branch and Philip Leach from Backwell branch, were in the speakers’ room to ask their questions and a further nine questions submitted through the event website were answered live.

One theme that came up in the questions was Nick’s commitment to resetting the relationship with postmasters and how that will be achieved and measured.

In response, Nick talked about a postmaster consultation planned for the autumn and said we’ll regularly survey postmasters in future, with a commitment to coming back to postmasters with a ‘You said, we did’ update on a regular basis.

More than 20 questions were submitted and those we didn’t get chance to answer on the night will be answered in the regional Facebook group and on One in the coming weeks.

There are six further events still to come this week and next week. Click here to find out more and to register for the events.
