Exclusive British Gas win set to fuel footfall growth

We’re delighted to confirm we have signed an exclusive bill payment contract with British Gas covering the Post Office and Payzone networks.

By securing this exclusive deal away from PayPoint for a minimum of five years from 1 January 2020, British Gas customers who choose to pay over the counter will only be able to use a Post Office or a Payzone location.

That means around 1.8 million additional British Gas and Scottish Gas customers will be coming to pay their bills or top up their meter on a regular basis across both networks from January. It really underlines our commitment to making sure postmasters are at the forefront of our business strategy – supporting you to run thriving local businesses.

Debbie Smith, Post Office Retail Chief Executive, said: “This is brilliant news, and builds on the existing relationship we have with British Gas.

“It will be a real boost for our partners in Post Office branches and Payzone stores across the country. The exclusivity means you could see significantly more customers coming through the door from January, driving much-needed footfall and additional business.”

Post Office bought Payzone Bill Payments Limited in October 2018 with the objective of winning new contracts to drive more customers to both networks, and this new, exclusive contract shows this is working. With around 24,000 locations across the two networks, it puts us in a stronger position to win and retain more major contracts like this. It also follows our first major contract win since the acquisition - ScottishPower smart meter top-ups, which went live in branches recently.

Along with the new Banking Framework agreement we announced in October, as well as the increases in postmaster remuneration we’ve just communicated, significant contract wins like this are going to be vital both in helping branches to thrive and to the commercial success of Post Office.
