Woodhouse Street lands two awards in one week

Woodhouse Street Post Office and Londis in Leeds, has had double success, achieving awards at two different awards finals. Postmaster Peter Bhadal attended two gala awards evenings in London to receive the awards.

The Londis store and Post Office was named Independent Retailer of the Year in the Asian Trader Awards on 20 November, then was named Availability category star at the Independent Achievers Academy (IAA) awards on 22 November.

Wide aisles improve customer flow

The store was modernised and re-opened in March after converting to the symbol group’s ‘store of the future’ format. There is a greater emphasis on ‘food to go’, ideal for its location at the heart of Leeds city which has a large student population.

Operator Peter Bhadal: “We are thrilled to have won two awards!

“We have vastly improved the look, feel and layout of the store to improve customer flow. It is now much easier for customers to move around. Customers really like the modern new layout, with more space in the aisles, it is now much easier to navigate around the store even with prams and wheelchairs and to find items quicker.”

Mr Bhadal and his staff have always been good at making sure the retail shelves are well stocked and merchandised correctly. Extra storage space has been created to make it quicker to replenish the store.

A head for numbers

IAA Award judges were also impressed that Mr Bhadal has used his EpoS (electronic point of sale) data to remove 300 lines of grocery with lower sales. Careful analysis of their data to better understand their customers’ preferences resulted in improved availability and a 25% sales increase in certain lines.

Great role models

Neil Ennis, Post Office Network Transformation and Network Development Programme Director: “We are thrilled that High Blantyre, Cloughoge and Woodhouse Street Post Offices were Category Stars in the IAA Awards, great results. We have many amazing postmasters. Congratulations to all of the 33 shortlisted branches and 12 finalists with Post Offices, they are all great role models as we look to the future.

“We are proud to support the IAA Awards, sponsoring the Customer Service Award and offering expert advice to retailers. We recognise that these awards help motivate retailers to grow their sales and profits by following expert advice and learning from the best practice and innovative ideas from the UK’s best independent retailers.”
