In May 2015, Huby & Sutton Community Shop Ltd took over the village stores and post office and rebranded as Barkers of Huby, in memory of the former shop owners David Barker and his late wife Lesley. The shop is now run by volunteers, the Post Office by paid staff, and the business managed by a Management Committee of 9 volunteers, chaired by Denise Howard OBE.
They offer essentials, as well as taking customer orders of fresh local meat, seasonal fresh fish and cakes and pies from the local Farmer’s market. They appreciate the fact that having the Post Office makes their business a destination for local people.
Awards cabinet coming along nicely
- In 2016, they were a Countryside Alliance Awards finalist.
- In 2017 they won the Plunkett Foundation Community Award.
- In 2018, they won Hambleton District Council Best Community Project.
Huby’s website says this about their 2019 Rural Oscars regional shortlist place:
“We've started 2019 with news that we are Yorkshire finalists in the Countryside Alliance ‘rural oscars' again. This is great news for all our volunteers who give their time and skills to keeping the shop open and running successfully. We're gathering quite a collection of awards and accolades which just goes to show, we might be volunteers, but we are definitely not amateurs!”
To all of the regional finalists in the 2019 Countryside Alliance Awards, well done for getting through to this stage and good luck!
