Supporting your customers on World Mental Health Day

Millions of customers walk through the doors of Post Offices every week, all going through different experiences and facing different challenges. Whatever their circumstances, from dementia to depression, the Post Office is there to help them.

1 in 4 people experience a mental health issue every year. That means 1 in 4 customers who walk through our doors need us to provide the right customer care.

Many branches across the country work hard to support their customers and communities, whether it’s fundraising for a local charity, sponsoring a local event, or simply supporting vulnerable customers.

On Wednesday 10 October, as part of World Mental Health Day we wanted to share a story of a branch who has been doing incredible work to support vulnerable residents in their community.

The branch in Hertfordshire was named the champion in the village shop and Post Office category at the national Countryside Alliance Awards earlier in the year, and last week was shortlisted for the Independent Achievers Academy awards. 

Pontrilas branch – supporting isolation and loneliness in the community

Pontrilas Post Office, Hertfordshire, run by Sonya Cary, illustrates the important impact postmasters can have on mental health in the community.

Sonya set up C.A.R.E (Care and Repair Enterprise) a social enterprise to support older and more vulnerable residents alongside Post Office services. She hosts a weekly lunch club, where residents can gather together, runs a local village transport scheme, and has partnered with the local GP practice providing a free prescription collection and delivery service.
