Postmasters shortlisted for Scottish Local Retailer award

Postmasters shortlisted for Scottish Local Retailer award

Congratulations to everyone shortlisted for 2019 Scottish Local Retailer of the Year. These awards recognise excellence in the convenience sector, with rewards for each category winner and a top of a trip to an international trade show in Atlanta in the US.

This year, the awards include our brand new, sponsored category, Post Office Retailer of the Year. This is to recognise Scottish retailers who combine a Post Office with their retail offering to form one successful business.

Congratulations to the branches shortlisted for Post Office Retailer of the Year:

  • Merchant City Post Office
  • Premier Coylton & Post Office
  • Spar Camelon
  • Spar Keith

Well done to all those shortlisted in other categories: See the full shortlist here.

Award judge visits top Scottish branches

We asked our representative on the judging panel, Kathryn Hollingsworth, about her branch visits as part of the awards process.

“I joined Antony Begley, Editor of SLR magazine, to ‘mystery shop’ four branches that have been shortlisted for Post Office Retailer of the Year in the SLR Rewards 2019.  These unannounced visits are part of the SLR’s judging process: the advantage is seeing the business exactly as the customer does, but the downside was that only one of the postmasters was on site.

The visits were informal; we wanted to see how well the retail and post office businesses were integrated, and how well they served their specific community.

Merchant City is a busy Main branch in Glasgow with lots of business customers, while Coylton is a Local Plus in a village in South Ayrshire with a lot of elderly customers, and where banking services are particularly important.

Camelon near Falkirk is in a managed Spar branch, which faces stiff supermarket competition so the Post Office and the Subway franchise are two important additions that make the store a destination.

Last but not least, Keith Post Office is in a small old town at the start of Scotland's malt whisky trail, which offers tours of three local distilleries: Strathmill, Glenkeith and Strathisla - which we didn’t visit, focusing on the task in hand. Keith’s Main Post Office is co-located in a smart Spar and serves a mix of business and local customers, and tourists trying to post bottles of whisky.”

Congratulations to all who have earned a place on the shortlist – and good luck!
