“Our job is to try to prepare them for their holiday”

The first winners have been announced in this year’s incentive scheme run by our Travel Money partner First Rate Exchange Services (FRES). We ask them about their win and their travel sales tips.

Prizes to be won

This summer FRES are giving away hundreds of £50 One4All gift cards to the best performing Travel Money branches, during our summer campaign, from 1 July to 1 September.

Branch feedback after last year’s scheme helped shaped this year’s branch incentive - and the first winning branches seem happy with the results.

We caught up with a few of them to ask them how it feels to win and what advice they’d give to other postmasters:

Bridget Baker, postmaster, Pocklington Post Office, Yorkshire

How does it feel to win?

We’re overjoyed! We had been trying really hard in the week, we hit our target, but weren’t sure if we’d done enough for the competition.

Do you have any travel sales tips for other postmasters?

Just to talk to everyone who comes through the door, regardless of what they have come in for. We ask them about their holiday plans, in a friendly way. If they are going away, we talk to them about their travel needs and get the conversation going that way. We’re a friendly branch anyway, so we always chat with our customers.

What are you going to spend your £50 One4All gift card prize on?

We are going to wait until the end of the campaign and see if we win any more. Then we will use them to go out for a meal with the whole team and put the gift cards towards the cost of that!

Mr Ian Carruthers, postmaster for Peebles branch, in Scotland

How does it feel to win?

“I’m absolutely delighted!”

Do you have any travel sales tips for other postmasters?

“Talk to everyone and anyone about Post Office Travel essentials. A lot of customers don’t know we sell Travel products. They might not go for it straight away, but if you talk to them, it might bear fruit later. Sometimes customers I talk to come back a week or a month later to buy travel money, travel insurance and so on. Our job is to try to prepare them for their holiday. We can be a one stop shop for travel.”

What are you going to spend your £50 One4All gift card prize on?

“I will be giving it to my staff in branch. They did the work, so they deserve the reward.”

Jenny Cain, postmaster, Barnards Green Post Office, Malvern.

How does it feel to win?

Lovely, I always like a freebie! I think this incentive scheme is a great idea, fantastic.

Do you have any travel sales tips for other postmasters?

For us, it’s all about our reputation as a branch. We’ve spread the word over the years that we are a travel money bureau, so customers know they can get their currency here. We link all of our passport conversations to travel money and travel insurance. It’s about talking to your customers, just keep chatting to them and find out what they need.

What are you going to spend your £50 One4All gift card prize on?

I’m giving it to a member of my team, she works really hard and although the whole team has contributed, I thought she was most deserving this time.

Who will the next weekly winners be?

Winners are announced through a new weekly email sent on Mondays from the One@postoffice.co.uk email account, keep an eye out for it. Perhaps next week it might be your turn.
