Sweetheart Abbey is over 700 years old and was quite literally built on love. The abbey was founded by Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway as a tribute to her beloved husband, John Balliol, a noble credited with founding Oxford’s Balliol College. When he died in 1268, she had his heart embalmed and put in an ivory casket, which she carried everywhere. Even to the dinner table. Now that’s devotion!
