The team at Ashford Post Office, a Directly Managed Branch in Kent, have been supporting a local food bank, Vinnie’s Diner, in the run up to Christmas by raising awareness and accepting food donations. Donations of tinned foods, dried produce (cereals, pasta and rice) and any food produce in jars can be dropped off at the branch, and the team deliver the items to the food bank.
Ashford Post Office decided that they wanted to do something worthwhile and give something back to the community. One of their customers runs the local food bank, around the corner from the Post Office, so they approached her to see what they could do to help.
Garry Block, Assistant Branch Manager said: “During December many of us will be finding gifts of sweets and chocolates behind the doors of our Advent Calendars. We wanted to organise an Advent Calendar in reverse. We’re encouraging people in the area to drop off food items in the branch so that we can deliver gifts of food to Vinnie’s Diner every day throughout December.”
Vinnie’s Diner is named after one of the volunteers who used to use the food bank’s services. In 2002 Vinnie was homeless and turned to them for help through the Christmas period. He is now helping individuals and families in need himself. The Diner is run on a Monday where they give a free hot meal to anyone who needs it, and they also give out a Food Parcel that should last a family a week. The Diner now supports between 150 and 200 individuals and families.
Ashford Post Office have had a fantastic response from the community and so far have 4 large boxes ready to be given over.
