Our branches are at the heart of communities up and down the UK providing vital services that people really need and Postmistress Raj Kaur certainly knows how to bring smiles to the face of her elderly customers even if they cannot visit her at Watford Road Post Office in Chiswell Green, St Albans, Greater London region.
Raj has made a concerted effort to brighten up the lives of those facing difficulties during the pandemic. When lockdown began the caring Postmistress delivered a potted flower with a message, then knocked on their door, stood well back and gave a cheery wave when they answered. The message read: “Be careful. Be safe.” It had her contact details if they needed anything. She also had special badges created locally that say: “Thinking of You”, which she has popped through customers’ doors.
During the pandemic Raj has offered free deliveries from her convenience store that she and her husband, Alan, have run for the past 32 years. Raj has been Postmistress for 20 years. Their shop sells a wide range of cards, which has resulted in Raj having caring chats with customers. Later she pops round with a potted plant to let these customers know that she was thinking about them at this difficult time.
Raj, who is Chairman of Chiswell Green Residents Association, said: “I have been blessed and lucky to live in this village. I feel as though I am part of one big family. The pandemic has caused uncertainty and sadness, but it has brought the community even closer together. We look out for those who have to stay at home and we do what we can. The community really enjoys the chance to see each other every Thursday during for clap for NHS and keyworkers.”
This has all been achieved whilst Raj has managed to keep Watford Road Post Office open throughout the pandemic and for its full opening hours.
Area Manager Simon Stracey said: “Postmistress Raj Kaur appears to be loved by every single member of her local community! It’s not hard to see why – she is so dedicated and caring. I’ve already had over 100 customer feedback responses for Raj this year – all positive”.

They take the time to understand what service you are after and use their considerable knowledge and experience to provide options for you to make an informed decision. Despite the challenging situation with the coronavirus, they continue to offer an invaluable service to the local community with a smile. Just brilliant!"
