And the winner is...Merchant City

Congratulations to Merchant City branch in Glasgow, which scooped the Post Office Retailer of the Year title at the Scottish Grocer Awards 2020.

Helena Taylor and Ann Findlay of Cairneyhill Spar & Post Office in Fife and Angela Pattie of Dalrymple Spar & Post Office in Ayrshire were also highly commended in the awards, now in their 24th year.

Run by Scottish Grocer and Convenience Retailer magazine, the awards recognise and celebrate the best in Scottish convenience retailing and saw 21 trophies go to some of Scotland’s top independent retailers, symbol stores, forecourts, employees and entrepreneurs.

Asim & Ava Baig own and run Merchant City Post Office on Glassford Street, Glasgow.  A very well maintained main Post Office combined with Spar retail, it is one of the busiest branches in Scotland.

“It was a great feeling to win as we’ve entered before and been highly commended” he said. “It is a great feeling for my team who work tirelessly for our customers and are really proud to receive this prestigious award.”

“We’re in the centre of Glasgow and have a mixed customer base that varies depending on the time of day.  We aim to keep everyone happy. We do a lot of banking for local businesses so have a dedicated counter, plus there are residential customers and students. We also have a lot of elderly and vulnerable customers who we also make sure receive our full care and attention.

“Customers love it because they can get everything they need in one place.  When people come in to use the Post Office they buy other items in the shop, and others pop in to buy a sandwich and decide to pay a bill at the same time. We are always looking to go the extra mile for our customers which we love to do, this makes our role in the community much more enjoyable and satisfying.”
