Home delivery, biometric technology and Brexit holidays: we look at what’s been going on in the world of retail and how it affects Post Office.

Co-op and Deliveroo Home Delivery Expansion

Co-op is looking to expand its partnership with Deliveroo which started last year in Manchester. Since then they’ve extended into London and are looking to continue to make the most of the food home delivery trend.

NatWest trials biometric cards

200 customers will test the new payment cards that will allow people to pay by using their fingerprint instead of typing in their PIN. The new technology could potentially help vulnerable customers, such as those living with dementia, who may have difficulty remembering their PIN codes.

Brexit confusion leads to bargain holidays

The UK travel industry is slashing prices to try to encourage more people to book holidays over the next few weeks and over Easter. For example, P&O Ferries is offering a ‘Brexit Buffer’, with free cancellations for bookings made up to 29 March, and according to the Independent, there are 1000s of airfares to EU destinations available on 29 March for less than £13.

Understand your audience on social media

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn all grew their global user base last year and social media remains a useful tool for small business. Successful small businesses advise people to understand where their audience is, and engage, rather than sell.

What does it mean for Post Office?

Convenience remains a key priority for customers and it’s a great way to appeal to younger customers who are driving demand for home delivery. Cash will continue to be important for many customers, but advances in fingerprint technology potentially mean that a cashless society could be more inclusive. No doubt there will be lessons to be learnt from NatWest’s trial. And lastly, everyone may be sick of the ‘B’ word, but many customers might be taking advantage of holiday deals during this period so it’s a great opportunity to talk about travel money and insurance.
