Royal Mail Parcel boxes – update

Further to Royal Mail’s parcel post boxes trial last summer, the Group have announced they will be extending this service out wider across the UK later this year.

The initial trial was held in the Northampton and Leicester area where 30 post boxes which were already used to accept franked mail, were adapted to accept small parcels posted using Royal Mail’s online Click & Drop service. Royal Mail will start to take this forward in August with a 6 month programme of work to upgrade the existing 1,400 franked mail post boxes. 

Competition in the Parcels market continues to grow and operators are increasingly looking to improve customer choice and convenience especially out of hours. By extending this service, Royal Mail are able to retain key customers who would otherwise choose services provided by other parcel operators. 

As with the trial, customers will not receive a certificate of posting for items dropped into these post boxes which is an important requirement for market place sellers and small businesses. These parcel boxes are not able to provide this and Royal Mail will be advising their local Click & Drop customers that they should continue to use their local Post Office for this service.
